MERMAID SMOOTHIE BOWL + HAWAII DAYDREAMS GUIDE

MERMAID SMOOTHIE BOWL + HAWAII DAYDREAMS GUIDE || Cream + Honey

Who doesn't want to be a mermaid? If you're female (or male) and grew up in the 90's then it's a given. We can't even help ourselves. We all still know every single word to The Little Mermaid soundtrack whether we like it or not. But we do like it. Or at least I do.

But if you don't want to be a mermaid then you must want to at least meet a mermaid. Or be friends with a mermaid. Or have a secret love affair with a mermaid and be part of her world, under the sea. No one can hate a mermaid because that would be like hating a unicorn. And if you hate unicorns then you're mean and probably a psychopath and I will block your number if you ever text me about your hatred for charming magical beings. You've been warned.

Pretty sure smoothie bowls are an offshoot from açai bowls originally from Brazil where açai berries grow. But my first açai bowl was a few years ago in Hawaii and was. life. changing. These delicious healthy bowls are served everywhere throughout the Hawaiian Islands and are the tastiest I've ever had. Maybe it's the freshness of the fruit, maybe it's the briny ocean air, maybe it's the laid back vibe or the love the Hawaiians put into their meals. Either way, they are a small form of perfection in my eyes.

This mermaid smoothie bowl is different though. Albeit inspired by the açai bowl, it is not to be directly compared. We must never compare

AÇAI BOWL = frozen açai blended with nut milk and fruit (often banana) + topped with granola, berries, banana, honey and bee pollen.

MERMAID SMOOTHIE BOWL = frozen fruit blended with nut milk + chlorophyll + essence of mermaid (optional). Topped with whatever your heart desires (seeds, nuts, granola, fruit, bee pollen, coconut, nut butter, mint, dates, etc. It's a free–for–all basically). As long as it's green and enchanting.

A few words on chlorophyll.

  1. It's so good for you guys! It's a super food and you can check out all the healthy things it does. Get the mint flavour, it's delicious and I drink it in my water just for fun. Plus it makes me feels mermaidish. Like I'm drinking a potion from the sea. But a good potion, like for your libido. Not an Ursula potion that steals your voice.
  2. It tastes better than spirulina. To me, spirulina tastes like I'm drinking from someone's unmaintained pond that I'd love to catch frogs in, but not drink from. I want to like it, I really really do. But I just don't.
  3. The rich forest green colour is intoxicating.

When I think Mermaid Bowl– it's all sand between my toes and floundering in ocean waves, so naturally the mermaid bowl inside me revealed itself to be very tropical in nature. I eat a lot of fruit in my everyday life but when I'm in a tropical place, just times that amount by ten. I obsess over the new mysterious fruits and how everything is perfectly ripe. Did you know there are at  least 50 different types of bananas in Hawaii alone?! My favourite was the “apple banana". It tastes like a pineapple flavoured banana! Not kidding.

Enter, if you wish, a daydream to Hawaii through some instagram photos from a few years back along with a story of adventure...

Week One

You awake to a hazy sunrise at Kealakekua Bay where dolphins come to swim and play. (Excuse the rhyme, it happened by accident. Don't expect anymore, okay? Okay.)

A rainbow appears because why not? You haven't had a good enough day yet, says Hawaii.

Wild chickens are on every roadside. They come to greet you (and almost jump in your car). It scares you for a minute, but it's okay because they're as close as a predator comes in Hawaii. One whispers softly in your ear, “buuuck buck-a-buck buck", which means, You look like you need a beer, It's 5 o'clock somewhere and you're  talking to chickens for f*@k's sake."

You share some delicious Hawaiian beers among friends or strangers, (it's the same thing here). You wonder if you dreamt that talking chicken but then decide to forget it because magical things are known to happen in Hawaii.

You eat poké bowls for dinner and question why you haven't been eating poké your whole life. Memo to self: “correct this immediately".

Day Two

You awake on a never ending windy road through a snowy land.  “AHHH! WHERE THE F*#K AM I?!?!", you scream.

“OMG I'VE BEEN ABDUCTED BY ALIENS AND THEY'RE TAKING ME TO A SECRET DOME IN THE SKY!! Probably going to get probed. This day is not looking good for me... Oh no, what underwear did I put on this morning?! I hope it's not my super holey period ones. I'll seem so undignified.."

You hear a familiar voice. It's your sister, she says, “WILL YOU CALM DOWN?! We are just driving up a dormant volcano. It's called sightseeing. This was your idea. Jeez, you fall asleep for 5 minutes and wake up a lunatic..." Oh. Haha! Right. Just visiting Mauna Kea like you planned. Sighhhh. You apologize, relax and check to see what underwear you're wearing. Pink with white popsicles with medium–wear. Well they're not exactly classy, but at least people won't think you're completely disgusting if you die in a car accident today.

You pick up some jackfruit to replenish from your scare and the high altitude. The sign wasn't lying. It really does taste like juicy fruit gum. Life is good.

You take a leisurely walk up a mountain and become one with nature. You ponder the meaning of life. In a good way. Like more ethereal and less existential, you know?

You swim at beautiful beaches. This one may be the perfect place for a mermaid sighting.

You stop to pick some fresh guavas on the side of the road. Someone is selling homemade banana bread from a stand, you buy some. You eat. You melt into a happy puddle of buttery-banana goo.

You arrive at a double waterfall and frolic in the water yelling, “Say I'm a bird! Say I'm a bird!", imagining that day you end up with Ryan Gosling and he'll want to act out the Notebook with you 15 years later because he's not tired of that movie.

You learn things. Real life things. Like that pineapples grow from a bush(?) and only one at a time. I guess a tree with fifty 5-pound hanging pineapples weighing it down didn't really make that much sense, now that you think about it.

MERMAID SMOOTHIE BOWL + HAWAII DAYDREAMS GUIDE || Cream + Honey

As you can see, I got super daydreamy about Hawaii while writing this post and decided to include a small Hawaii guide of my most favourite things I ate or did while I was there. I'm not sure this really belongs here but I don't know what to do with it and it has spilled out of me so I'm sorry for my distractedness and all the scrolling you have tolerated throughout this post.. (Recipe follows afterwards)

Mini Hawaii Guide

*Note: This is a list of some things I ate and loved or places I visited in Hawaii. This is by no means an extensive nor definitive list of the best stuff ever, just what I might recommend to any person going to Hawaii who might not know where to start. Enjoy!*

Food

Umeke's – for poké || Big Island, Hawaii || My first and most beloved poké bowl to date was at Umeke's in Kailua-Kona (photo up above) and was served with quinoa + lomi lomi salmon. Their homemade strawberry lemonade is delicious and comes in a large mason jar with fruit inside.

Giovanni's Shrimp Truckfor seafood plate lunch || Oahu, Hawaii || Stopped here while driving the North coast of Oahu. Got the shrimp scampi and spicy shrimp, both served with rice and delicious sauces.

Diamond Head Cove Health Barfor açai bowls || Oahu, Hawaii || I ate açai bowls every day in Hawaii. And these... oh man. All I have to say is... you the you the best, you the you the best, the best I ever had, best I ever had, best I ever had.

Maui Brewing Co + Kona Brewing Co || Both companies make delicious and refreshing beers. Three of my favourites are in the photo up above– Longboard Lager, Coconut porter, Bikini Blonde Lager.

And just generally eat these as much as you can:  All the fresh fruit you can find, tacos, mochi, laulau, macadamia nuts!!! They are waaaay different in Hawaii. I didn't even think I liked macadamia nuts that much until I went here and ate my weight in them.

Sights

Mauna Kea || Big Island, Hawaii || Dormant volcano + the highest point in Hawaii with astronomy observatories and telescopes owned by different countries all over the world. I mean, it's a mothaf*#$ing volcano. Enough said.

Kapoho Tide Pools || Big Island, Hawaii || The best snorkelling I've ever done in my life. So many varieties of fish + coral. Also good for beginners or people who don't swim well. The pools are not super deep and you don't have to go far out into the water. Bring water shoes, there are lots of sharp things. SO WORTH IT.

Kealakekua Bay || Big Island, Hawaii || A gorgeous view outside Kailua-Kona. Dolphins come swim here sometimes in the early mornings, great for snorkelling + Captain Cook monument on the North side.

Two Step Beach || Big Island, Hawaii || 20 minute drive down the road from Kealakekua Bay. More amazing snorkelling + beautiful blue–green waters.

Kilauea || Big Island, Hawaii || Active volcano with an art gallery in the visitor's centre that has some cool paintings of Hawaiian folklore, goddesses/gods and nature of Hawaii.

Papakolea Green Sand Beach || Big Island, Hawaii || Beach off the beaten path with olive sand and stunningly beautiful. Walk three miles from parking lot or hop in trucks that drive back and forth for some cash.

Diamond Head || Oahu, Hawaii || hiking and beautiful views.

Road To Hana || Maui, Hawaii || Drive the winding roads on Maui's east coast. You can stop for a swim at the Black Sand Beach, escape the sun + cool off in lava tubes, hike the Pipwai Trail through a bamboo forest to waterfalls and take a break for some roadside homemade banana bread.

Secret Beach Party Sundays || Little Beach, Maui, Hawaii || Secret beach where clothing is optional and on Sunday afternoons until sunset, the beach turns into a party with hula hoops, drums + many fire activities –dancers, twirlers and generally blowing fire into the sky from a spout thing? People be getting weird here so sit back and watch the show that is humankind.
